The Home Repair Program offers loans and grants to Northampton seniors to assist with repairs to their homes. The Northampton Council on Aging acts as a senior’s advocate during the entire process, from initial intake through the final inspection of the work performed.

To qualify for this program, participants must:

  • be 60 years or older
  • reside in Northampton, Florence, or Leeds
  • be listed on their deed as a simple owner or life tenant
  • own a single family home
  • have an household income identified by the US Government as low or moderate income

Examples of Home Repair projects are:

  • heating systems
  • roofs
  • accessibility modifications
  • window replacements
  • electrical and plumbing upgrades
  • porch and foundation repairs
  • asbestos removal

Projects that cost under $2000 are eligible for a grant, which would not need to be repaid.

Projects between $2000 and $5000 are financed through a deferred payment loan. These loans do not have a monthly payback charge. As long as the senior lives in and owns the home, the loan simply sits there. If the senior sells the home or moves from the home within the 20 year term of the loan, it will become due along with 2½% simple annual interest. On the 20 year anniversary of the loan, it will be forgiven entirely and no payback to the City of Northampton is required.

For more information about the Home Repair Program, call 587-1313 and speak with the business manager.
